| well hello friends...two more days and I am home...really weird to think that I have been here for a month. doesnt seem that long...but then again...it does..when I think about what all we have done and how I felt the first few days I was here...Lauren and I were talking on the train yesterday..oh ya..we went to segovia...loved it...but we were talking and we are worried that we are going to dress differently and people are going to look at us like we are weird...ya..brown and black is ok here...i know..strange..but it is kinda nice..you can wear all of your favorites and not have to worry...but i wish i would have known that before I came...i mean i didnt need 4 purses...whoops..:)..but ya..I think that i can trade not wearing black and brown for wearing sweatpants every day...that is fine with me...:) also I have started responding with some very basic spanish phrases...umm...so if i do that when I get back...whoops..:)..I do feel like it is time to go home..dad will be happy because I wont be spending money like it is going out of style...seriousily dad...(I have saved as much as possible)..I mean I will miss this place like crazy...but i have found out that I really need a routine in my life...and there is no routine here at all....also...i miss my friends and family...i guess being in a place where I know I can drive to see them anytime or call whenever makes it better...I can go without seeing them for a long time...but when you are overseas..and it cost to call and you are saving money...it makes me sad...ok...no sadness..i will be home in two days...and i am going to have super fun the last two days in madrid...even though I think I will be back here sometime in my life...I mean I could live in Barcelona...as long as I meet people...ok..well..love you all and I will be in Miami on thursday afternoon...you better believe I will call as many people as possible..bye friends... | | |
| hello friends! here again..in a new internet place because our other one is under construction...
Laurens parents are here and it has been a great time getting to show them around the city. they came in town yesterday and then today we went to the Palace and tonight we are going to a flamenco show...then lauren and I are planning to go to Club Kapital. It should be interested...the description says 7 floors of intoxicating dancing...whatever that is I hope I like it...you all know how much I like to dance(haha)..we will have to see how it goes...oh..yesterday I went to return an item and I did it!! all by myself! I actually held a semi-conversation with someone in spanish...now dont get me wrong. I read a lot of body language...but still...i understood..oh..and the guy gave me directions to this different internet place...and i understood!! ok...i am really exciting..so what it took me 3 and a half weeks to catch on. umm...i am home in 4 days...which is really sad, but kinda exciting. I will miss the city, but I am ready to start this semester and make it great. i am also ready to talk to everyone..for hours!! because they will all speak english!! and talk on my cell phone...and keep it on all of the time..even though I now know I can live without it for a month...no problem..it will also be nice to be able to plug something in without having a converter...and to be able to save money...i feel like the cash flows through my hand way too freely...
oh...some of lauren and I´s favorite hobbies while in spain:singing lines to songs about whatever words we happen to say...watching people out of our window...drinking some way-too-strong coffee...climbing mountains(not a favorite)...eating "snacks"...making new concoctions(sp?) for our snack times..umm..thats all I can think of...
oh..and a couple words of advice...when writing an overnight train...pay the extra 10 euro for a bed...the seats are miserable!! definitely not like an airplane... | | |
| well...hello again...from barcelona!! We got here monday morning and I love it here...more than madrid...it may be because we find english in many places...but I love it..i feel like people are really friendly and helpful...we found this place called the travel bar...actually it found us...they pass out little flyers on the sidewalk at night.....but we went there on monday night..and met friends from the states...and last night we ended up there again and we met friends from england...they were super nice and really really funny...they are actually in barcelona filming a skating video of some sort..which was interesting...we traded contact info though...so we will hopefully be able to keep in touch. anyway though...we have been staying in a hostel the past couple of nights...and it hasnt been too bad..different but not horrible...and they have free internet access...which is always a plus...umm...so..how I love barcelona...yesterday we went up to the olympic stadium...that was really cool....it actually wasnt as big as what i thought it would be...but neat to think that all those people were there...umm..a lot of the gaudi sites are under construction...which is really sad because pics arent so good...I guess that is what happens when you come in the off-season. but tonight we are off again to madrid...we are taking another overnight train.. this time we are not getting a bed, we have seats...but it was 19 euro...who can pass that up??..so 9 hours in a seat may be interesting...umm...thats all really...lauren and I are really good at singing...by the way...at least we try...we have had a lot of walking and time to sing random songs...which usually ends with us laughing or wondering when we got that song in our head...who knows...but they still love madonna here...and we here a lot of james blunt..which is exciting..cause I like him...ok...have a great day...and even though this is going to say I posted at 3 in the morn...it is really 10 am...weird huh?? | | |
| ok..if you dont usually read my little stories you should take the time to read ths one...it is out of control!! ok..i have to go back a little bit because i forgot to tell you guys something crazy awhile back...ok..we are on our way to el escorial...and we walk into the train station to get our tickets for the journey...(still my favorite journey) and we her someone yell Lauren´s name...kinda strange...we looked around and there was Andrea Swall sitting at a table with her father...waiting on their train to Italy...we chatted a bit..I guess they had only been in town a couple of days...and out of all the times we could have been at the train station we were there at the same time...SO STRANGE....ok..so it gets even crazier...that was on thursday...and friday..after our crazy bus ride...we decided we were going out for tapas...as I said...we are sitting at this little coffee house...and this girl comes in that looks really familiar...Lauren thought so also...She looked like Erin Marcotte(sp?)...and I had talked to her roommate and she said that she was going to be in spain this semester...I didnt think there was any possible way it could be her though...she was going to be in seville and everything..there was no way...but after I kept watching her...I had to say something...so I decided I would ask where she was from...when I went to talk to her..she was like..oh my..you are familiar...then she was like...Abbey??..It turns out she was leaving for Seville on saturday morning...she was in town for a little while...how strange is that?? of all the cafes in madrid...and all the nights lauren and I could have gone out...and all of the people...so weird!! and 2 days in a row!! Erin and I chatted for a bit...and then she was going to meet someone that is in the same program with her...I am still amazed at how random it all was...I know you guys are waiting for me to say that it is all a story...but seriousily...it happened...and lauren and I are still wondering how it happened...so strange...anyway...today we are leaving for Barcelona...we are taking an overnight train..I am excited...and actually wearing sweatpants and a hoodie for the first time since I arrived here...so nice..:) cant wait to get back to the life of looking crappy at GU...even though it has been nice to use the clothes that never come out of my closet...maybe I will begin to get them out a little more..oh ya...lauren and I are going to bring tights, skirts, and boots to GU...not really..but everyone here is so cute in them...maybe one day we will get everyone to participate...maybe??...ok...well..have a good weekend...and I will tell you about our experiences in Barcelona when I get back...unless we have net in our hostal...yes...we are staying in a hostal...I think...ok..have a good night...well..I guess afternoon there...love you all!! | | |
| first...i have to say...becky I love you!! :) and then I have to tell you how much Lauren and I dislike the bus system here in madrid. Today we went to the other train station in town because we are taking an over night train to Barcelona on sunday night. We are on our way...using the wonderful metro and we realize our stop is closed for repairs. There is a bus that will take us to the station from where it ended..FABULOUS!! we were fine! we made it to the station...bought the tickets...and went back to the stop where we got on the bus to go to the metro...got on it...rode it through rush hour...for a little over an hour...and everyone gets off...Lauren and I are along on the bus and I move to a different seat...they lady yells at me in Spanish...of course I have no idea what is going on...I guess we missed the last stop on that bus...so she dumps us off and tells us to get on bus 66...we did...and we ride along...until the driver tells us to get off...we were at the last stop...are you kidding me??..is this really happening?? the area we were in was off of the map...so no idea where to even walk...we finally find a metro stop...that is shut down for repairs...and get on a bus...but not without asking where it went and such...so 2 wasted euros for those bus rides...and 2 hours later...we made it home...STARVING...we hadnt had anything to eat since that morning and it was around 530...never again will I ride the bus...especially if I cant ask the driver if we are going to the right place....other than that...I loved El Escorial...we climbed a mountain to see it...but it was breath-taking....my favorite so far...umm...tonight we are going out for tapas...which should be interesting...I hope I can figure out what I am ordering...oh...and I have bought items on my own...amazing...:) ok...well..hope all is well...and I miss you all...I will be home in about 2 weeks...crazy... | | |
